ROLE: Illustration and design

In 2023 I completed two courses: Immersion  and Repertoire, which taught the art of surface pattern design and the history behind the many varied patterns that populate our world.

Toile de Jouy is a traditional pattern which originated in 18th century France. Historically, this style of pattern would depict pastoral landscapes, often with men and ladies in 18th century garb peppered in among the foliage. In recent years, many artists have updated this style by creating their own twists on Toile fabric designs.

When I first discovered Toile, I knew I had to try my hand at designing my own unique version of it. I've always been drawn to etching-style artwork, and have a strong affinity for art that is functional, beautiful, and conveys a narrative.

I call my design Mount Olympus Toile, because I asked myself the question: what would Mount Olympus look like? There would be cliffs and rocks, clouds, rivers, and plants. And of course, the many gods & goddesses would be there, hanging out.

Scroll to see the pattern in some different contexts, as well as details of Zeus, Poseidon, Hermes, Icarus, et al. All illustrations were meticulously hand-drawn by me.  View more of my pattern designs here.
